USA for UNHCR’s Gift-in-Kind Program Provides Refugees with Dignity and Hope
Since 2020, USA for UNHCR’s gift-in-kind program has seen remarkable growth, delivering dignity and support to refugees in over 19 countries. In 2023, USA for UNHCR provided humanitarian essentials—such as tents, blankets, kitchen sets, and clothing—to one million people, benefiting UNHCR programs in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sudan, Syria, Türkiye and Ukraine.
In partnership with Good360, a nonprofit that works with companies to distribute donated goods where they can do the most good, USA for UNHCR has mobilized and delivered 5.1 million pieces of clothing and footwear. Following devastating earthquakes in Syria and Türkiye, USA for UNHCR leveraged Airbnb’s financial and technical support to provide housing to those who were displaced by the disasters.
The incredible impact of USA for UNHCR’s gift-in-kind program is in large part thanks to our service-in-kind transport from UPS Foundation, Airlink and Flexport.org, including donated shipping containers. These partnerships represent a step towards achieving our sustainability goals that align with SDG12 on responsible consumption and production.
“We’re very grateful for this donation from Project C.U.R.E. & Flexport, facilitated by USA for UNHCR,” said Dr. Naol Berhanu, UNHCR Assistant Public Health Officer in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “This will allow over 3,000 refugees living with a disability to recover their mobility. The canes and walkers will allow them to keep the weight off the injured leg, assist with balance, avoid falls and allow them to perform daily activities – restoring their dignity.”
